The Coffee Pod:
Key To A Great Cup of Coffee

Boca Java Signature Sampler
Coffee pods are freshly roasted coffee, which has been ground, pressurized for taste, and enclosed in paper for single-serve brewing machines. The standard size of a pod is about 44 millimeters, within which is placed 6.8 to 7.0 grams of coffee per coffee pod.

The coffee pod has only been around for the last decade. In 1996, Illy Caffe came up with the original idea, which the group then marketed to the coffee industry. As a result, many of today's coffee machines have been adapted to use coffee pods because they're such an easy alternative to measuring out the coffee.

Coffee pods are especially useful for making espresso. Espresso can be an especially difficult type of coffee to make, and without the proper measurements, you can easily make an awful cup. However, with a coffee pod, all you have to do is place it in an automatic espresso machine, and the machine does the rest of the work. It doesn't get much easier than that.

In addition to the 44 millimeter coffee pods, there are also 55 and 62 millimeter coffee pods. The 44 and 52 millimeter pods are best for espresso machines, while the 62 millimeter pods are best for the Black and Decker Home Café coffee machine, as well as the Philips Senseo coffee machine. As you can see, different machines have different requirements, so it's important to note the pod size that your home coffee machine can take.

Coffee pods are not limited to a single, standard flavor. Indeed, coffee pods come in a variety of flavors such as Amaretto, Irish Cream, Hazelnut, and Vanilla. Most coffee specialty shops carry them, but if you don't have a specialty shop close by, you can also order them online. The price depends on the flavor, the amount of coffee within each pod, and where you choose to make your purchase, since lately it has been fashionable to buy pods from Europe. Regardless of the price, coffee pods are a great way to avoid measuring and focus on brewing a memorable cup of coffee.
